Fundamental Principles of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church (1889-1931) in Today’s English.
Please Note: The 1872 Fundamental Principles written by James White were identical to the Fundamental Principles of 1889 except for the following added Fundamental Principles.
•A Peculiar People
•Christian Dress
•Financial Obligation
The Fundamental Principles of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Seventh-day Adventists do not follow a man-made creed; the Bible alone is their foundation of faith. However, they do hold clear and well-defined beliefs, and they are ready to explain and defend those beliefs to anyone who asks.
The following statements summarize the main teachings of their faith. As far as is known, these beliefs are shared in full agreement throughout the entire church. They believe:
I. God
There is one God. He is a personal and spiritual being, the Creator of everything. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and eternal. His character is perfect—full of wisdom, holiness, justice, goodness, truth, and mercy. God does not change, and He is present everywhere through His representative, the Holy Spirit.
Psalms 139:7
“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?”
Who is God according to the Bible, Spirit of Prophecy, and the pioneers?
One God, the Father
• 1 Corinthians 8:6
“But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things…”
• John 17:3
“That they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
• Ephesians 4:6
“One God and Father of all, who is above all…”
Christ as the Son of God
• John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…”
• Hebrews 1:1–2
“God… hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son…”
Holy Spirit as God’s Spirit
• Psalm 51:11
“Take not thy holy spirit from me.”
• John 14:26
“The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name…”
The pioneers emphasized plain Bible language rather than philosophical terms.
⸻
2. Fundamental Principles (1889)
The 1889 Fundamental Principles are explicit and simple:
Fundamental Principle No. 1 – God
“That there is one God, a personal, spiritual being, the creator of all things…”
This statement:
• Affirms one God
• Describes Him as personal
• Uses no Trinitarian terminology
• Reflects biblical monotheism, not creedal theology
Fundamental Principle No. 2 – Christ
“That there is one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Eternal Father…”
Key points:
• Christ is distinct from the Father
• Christ is the Son, not the same person as the Father
• Authority flows from the Father
⸻
3. Ellen G. White Statements (Chronological Harmony with the Pioneers)
Ellen White consistently supported the pioneers’ biblical framework.
One Supreme God – the Father
“The Father is all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”
(Ellen G. White, Review and Herald, June 19, 1900)
“God is the Father of Christ; Christ is the Son of God.”
(Testimonies for the Church, vol. 8, p. 268)
Christ’s Divine Sonship
“Christ is the only begotten Son of God.”
(Signs of the Times, May 30, 1895)
“The Father gave His Son all authority.”
(Matthew 28:18, echoed repeatedly in EGW writings)
The Holy Spirit
“The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ.”
(Manuscript Releases, vol. 14, p. 84)
“The Spirit is the presence and power of God. (paraphrased from multiple early statements)
Ellen White never contradicts the Fundamental Principles and consistently avoids speculative definitions.
⸻
4. Pioneer Statements (Representative)
James White
“The Father is the greatest in the universe.”
(Review and Herald, Jan. 4, 1881)
Joseph Bates
“Respecting the trinity, I concluded that it was impossible for me to believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was the Almighty God, the Father.”
(The Autobiography of Elder Joseph Bates)
J. N. Andrews
“The Father is the supreme source of all authority.”
(Review and Herald, March 6, 1855)
These men grounded their views strictly in Scripture, not tradition.
⸻
5. Why This Mattered to the Pioneers
The pioneers believed that:
• Creeds confuse
• Philosophy corrupts
• Scripture clarifies
They saw later theological systems as a danger to:
• The personhood of the Father
• The real Sonship of Christ
• The simplicity of the gospel
⸻
Summary Statement
The Bible, the 1889 Fundamental Principles, the writings of Ellen G. White, and the statements of the pioneers are united in teaching one personal God—the Father, His divine Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit as the Spirit and presence of God, without speculative or creedal definitions.

Scripture-Only Summary Statement
According to these passages, the Holy Spirit knows, wills, speaks, teaches, guides, sends, forbids, intercedes, testifies, can be grieved and resisted, and works in unity with the Father and the Son, proceeding from the Father and glorifying Christ.
II. Jesus Christ
There is one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of the eternal Father. Through Him all things were created, and through Him all things continue to exist.
He took on human nature, being born as a descendant of Abraham, in order to save humanity after the fall. He lived among people, full of grace and truth. His life is our example. He died as our sacrifice, was raised from the dead for our justification, and then ascended to heaven.
In heaven, He now serves as our only Mediator in the heavenly sanctuary. Through the merit of His shed blood, He provides pardon and forgiveness to all who come to Him with repentance.
As the final part of His priestly work—before He takes His throne as King—He will complete the great atonement for all who have trusted in Him. Their sins will be blotted out (Acts 3:19) and removed from the heavenly sanctuary, just as shown in the service of the Levitical priesthood, which pointed forward to Christ’s ministry in heaven.
Leviticus Chapter 16
Hebrews 8:4-5
“For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.”
Hebrews 9:6-7
“Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: but into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:”
III. The Holy Scriptures
The Old and New Testaments were given by the inspiration of God. They fully reveal God’s will to humanity and are the only infallible rule for faith and Christian living.
IV. Baptism
Baptism is an ordinance of the Christian church that follows faith and repentance. It commemorates the resurrection of Christ by symbolizing His burial and resurrection, and our faith in the resurrection of all the saints at the last day. The only biblical method that truly represents these truths is baptism by immersion.
Romans 6:3-5
“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.”
Colossians 2:12
“Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”
V. The New Birth
The new birth includes everything necessary to prepare us for the kingdom of God and has two parts:
1. A moral change through conversion and a Christian life.
2. A physical change at Christ’s second coming, when the dead are raised incorruptible and the living are changed to immortality in a moment.
John 3:3, 5
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God… Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God”
Luke 20:36
“Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.”
1 Corinthians 15:51-52
“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, for this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
VI. Prophecy
Prophecy is part of God’s revelation and is included in Scripture for instruction. It was given for God’s people and their children, not to confuse them, but to guide them. Prophecy is a light that helps God’s people understand their place in history and the duties required of them. A blessing is promised to those who study it.
(2 Timothy 3:16; Deuteronomy 29:29; Psalm 119:105; 2 Peter 1:19; Revelation 1:1–3)
VII. Prophetic History
Bible prophecy outlines world history—from specific past dates, through the rise and fall of empires, to the establishment of God’s eternal kingdom. All major prophetic chains have been fulfilled except the final events.
VIII. The Millennium
The belief that the world will be converted before Christ returns and enjoy a peaceful millennium is false. Christ’s second coming comes before the millennium, not after. Until He returns, evil and righteousness continue together, and wickedness increases, just as Scripture foretells.
(1 Thessalonians 5:3; 2 Thessalonians 2:8; Matthew 13:29–30; 2 Timothy 3:1, 13)
IX. The 1844 Experience
The Adventist mistake in 1844 was not the timing, but the nature of the event expected. No prophecy extends to the second coming. The longest prophetic period—the 2,300 days of Daniel 8:14—ended in 1844 and pointed to the cleansing of the sanctuary.
X. The Heavenly Sanctuary
The sanctuary of the new covenant is in heaven, where Christ ministers as our great High Priest. It is the true sanctuary that the earthly tabernacle symbolized. Its cleansing refers to Christ entering the Most Holy Place to complete His atoning work by blotting out the sins of believers. This work began in 1844 and ends just before Christ’s return.
(Leviticus 16; Hebrews 8–9; Acts 3:19)
XI. The Law of God
God’s moral law is the same in every age. It is summarized in the Ten Commandments, spoken by God, written on stone, and placed in the ark. This law is unchangeable and eternal, and the heavenly sanctuary contains the ark of God’s testament.
(Numbers 10:33; Hebrews 9:4; Revelation 11:19)
XII. The Sabbath
The fourth commandment requires keeping the seventh day of the week as the Sabbath. It was established at creation and will be observed in the new earth. The Bible knows only one weekly Sabbath—the seventh day. The terms “Jewish Sabbath” and “Christian Sabbath” are human inventions without biblical support.
(Genesis 2:2–3; Isaiah 66:22–23)
XIII. Sabbath Reform
Prophecy foretells a reform among believers before Christ’s return, restoring obedience to God’s law—especially the Sabbath—after it was changed by the papal power.
(Daniel 7:25; Isaiah 56:1–2; Revelation 14:12)
XIV. Christian Lifestyle
Followers of Christ are called to live differently from the world—rejecting its values, pleasures, and sins. Friendship with the world places one in opposition to God.
(James 4:4; Matthew 6:24)
XV. Modesty
Scripture teaches simplicity and modesty in dress as a mark of true discipleship. Clothing and adornment meant to promote pride or display wealth are inconsistent with Christlike humility.
(1 Timothy 2:9–10; 1 Peter 3:3–4)
XVI. Support of the Gospel
The work of the gospel should be supported by willing offerings given out of love—not through entertainment or worldly fundraising. Tithing is a biblical principle, belonging to God, and offerings are to be given beyond the tithe to support His work.
(Leviticus 27:30; Hebrews 7:1–4; Malachi 3:8–10; 2 Corinthians 9:6)
XVII. Conversion
Human nature is naturally opposed to God and His law. This hostility can only be overcome by a complete change of heart, brought about by repentance, faith, and the work of the Holy Spirit. This is conversion.
XVIII. Justification and Obedience
Because all have broken God’s law, we depend entirely on Christ—first for forgiveness of past sins, and then for grace to live in obedience going forward.
XIX. Spiritual Gifts
The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to the church. These gifts do not replace the Bible but work alongside it. They exist to guide, convict, and transform God’s people until the end of time. To deny the Spirit’s work is to deny part of Scripture itself.
(1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4)
XX. The Three Angels’ Messages
Before Christ returns, God sends a final warning message to the world, symbolized by the three angels of Revelation 14. These messages call people to obedience, faithfulness, and readiness for Christ’s coming.
XXI. Investigative Judgment
Beginning in 1844, the cleansing of the sanctuary marks a work of investigative judgment—first for the dead, and later for the living—determining who will take part in the first resurrection and translation before Christ returns.
XXII–XXIII. The State of the Dead
Death is a state of silence, rest, and unconsciousness. The grave is not a place of awareness, activity, or knowledge.
(Ecclesiastes 9:5–10; Psalm 146:4; Daniel 12:2)
XXIV. The Resurrections
All will be raised from the dead. The righteous are raised at Christ’s second coming. The wicked are raised after the thousand years.
(Revelation 20:4–6)
XXV. Translation of the Living
At Christ’s return, the living righteous will be instantly changed to immortality and caught up with the resurrected saints to meet the Lord.
(1 Thessalonians 4:16–17; 1 Corinthians 15:51–52)
XXVI. The Millennium
The redeemed will reign with Christ in heaven for a thousand years, participating in judgment. During this time, the earth lies desolate, and Satan is confined here until his final destruction.
(Revelation 20; Jeremiah 4:23–27)
XXVII. Final Destruction of the Wicked
At the end of the millennium, the wicked are raised, surround the New Jerusalem, and are destroyed by fire from God. This is total and final destruction—everlasting death, not eternal torment. The earth is purified by fire.
(Revelation 20; Malachi 4:1; 2 Peter 3:7–12)
XXVIII. The New Earth
God will create a new heaven and a new earth. The renewed earth, with the New Jerusalem as its capital, will be the eternal home of the redeemed, where the righteous will live forever.
(2 Peter 3:13; Psalm 37:11, 29; Matthew 5:5
I. Dios
Eles acreditam:
I. Deus

I. Gott
Sequentia enuntiationes doctrinas principales fidei eorum summatim exhibent. Quantum notum est, hae credentiae in tota ecclesia unanimi consensu coluntur. Credunt:
I. Deus
I. Бог
I. Θεός
I. परमेश्वर
Pernyataan-pernyataan berikut merangkum ajaran-ajaran utama iman mereka. Mereka percaya:
I. Allah
(Imamat 16; Ibrani 8:4–5; 9:6–7)
